Filmed in secret using an iPhone, and mostly firing on all cylinders as an edge-of-your-seat thriller, the director Steven Soderbergh works some wonders.
For example, Claire Foy, as a pure contrast to playing the Queen in The Crown, shows excellence as Sawyer Valentini, a businesswoman who intentionally becomes trapped in a mental asylum. It’ll work against my interest to say much more but suffice to say, if as the Queen, Foy was, again, restrained, she’s off the walls here (although not without keeping her integrity).
All that in mind, Soderbergh notably broke out with the voyeurism-themed Sex, Lies, and Videotape (1989). This vibe carries across to Unsane where because of the iPhone filming particularly, that’s “enhanced”. So even if the film stretches credibility as it continues, you’re no doubt watching something that commits to what it is.
